Laparoscopic Colectomy Performed for the First Time Ever at Chania Hospital
Editorial Team – 30 November 2017
With complete success, a laparoscopic colectomy was performed for the first time in the history of Chania Hospital, as officially announced today by the hospital’s administrator, Minas Voulgaridis.
More specifically, Mr. Voulgaridis states the following in his announcement:
“We feel the need to publicly congratulate the members of the team of the First Surgical Clinic of our hospital, under surgeon Mr. Miltiadis Kastanakis, who successfully performed, for the first time in the history of Chania General Hospital, a laparoscopic colectomy.
The doctors and nursing staff of our First Surgical Clinic made us proud, as they demonstrated in practice their high level of scientific training, their sense of responsibility, their zeal, and their dedication to the National Health System.
At the same time, we would like to especially thank the Director of the Surgical Clinic of the Naval Hospital of Athens, Nikos Georgopoulos, who volunteered (responding to the invitation of Mr. Kastanakis) to assist in carrying out this pioneering surgical procedure of laparoscopic colectomy.
This procedure involves the laparoscopic removal of the colon, a process that is far less traumatic for the patient, with reduced postoperative pain and a better cosmetic outcome.
With the successful performance of this operation at Chania General Hospital, we believe that the hospital is gaining recognition in the public consciousness and that citizens’ trust in it is being strengthened.”
MILTIADIS KASTANAKIS
In a post yesterday on his personal Facebook page, Mr. Miltiadis Kastanakis states the following:
“Professional conscientiousness. With these two simple words, yet words of great meaning, my friend and excellent colleague Nikos Georgopoulos described to me the experience he gained from Chania General Hospital.
The reason for his visit was the invitation we extended to him, which he accepted with great pleasure, in order to help us perform the first laparoscopic colectomy at our hospital.
Leaving behind his demanding schedule in Athens, as Director of the Surgical Clinic at the Naval Hospital of Athens, he shared with us his valuable knowledge and experience.
I should also add that he was impressed by the building infrastructure of Chania General Hospital and by its overall operation. We have certainly created the conditions and made a start in a different field. It is up to us to continue. Through this small public platform, I thank everyone who contributed to the realization of this operation, and especially the administration for the support it provided us.
P.S.: The characterization with which I began this description referred to the operating room nursing staff, and when it comes from an experienced surgeon like Mr. Georgopoulos, who has worked in large and modern hospitals, it carries even greater significance.”
