Georgopoulos Nikolaos

GENERAL SURGEON

Nikolaos Georgopoulos is a General Surgeon who maintains private practices at Mavili Square (Athens) and in Sparta. From 2012 to 2023, he served as Director of the 2nd Surgical Department at the Naval Hospital of Athens.

He is currently Director of the 5th Surgical Department at Mediterraneo Hospital, where he also examines patients in the surgical outpatient clinic.

He graduated from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

He completed his specialty training in General Surgery in April 1995, having trained at the Naval Hospitals of Crete and Athens, as well as at “Evangelismos” General Hospital of Athens, with focused training in:

  • Trauma surgery
  • Upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery
  • Endocrine surgery
  • Bariatric (obesity) surgery
  • Laparoscopic surgery
  • Organ transplantation

In total (including procedures performed in private clinics), he has operated on more than 8,500 patients.

During his career, he completed postgraduate training abroad in the United Kingdom (24 months), Belgium, France (3 months), Italy (3 months), Switzerland, and Brazil.

He has performed surgery on approximately 1,100 patients with morbid obesity, achieving excellent outcomes, including the first laparoscopic gastric bypass performed in Greece in November 2003.

During his most recent training in Spain, focused on lower rectal cancer, he was trained in and successfully performed laparoscopic surgery (including TaTME), preserving the anal sphincters and anus and avoiding permanent colostomy.

He has also been trained in Robotic Surgery.

Overall, he has more than 37 years of surgical experience. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair, having operated on more than 1,150 patients.

In addition, he is trained in minimally invasive management of anorectal diseases.

He co-organizes national and international conferences, actively following and contributing to developments in surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and metabolic–bariatric surgery.
